Cynicism Management: Tit
04/11/11 || sly
It is rare that a stub-band actually has an interesting backstory. I was surprised to discover that Cynicism Management began as a fictional band.
A small group of Slovenians decided to start a blog, on which they would write small bits of a long story following the adventures of a band called “Cynicism Management”. The idea was that the small pieces of their epic tale would eventually become a novel. The blog even included songs written by the fictitious group. However, the music apparently became more of a focal point than the novel, and Cynicism Management’s creators embodied their creation. In a way, it could be compared to how Dethklok transformed from a virtual band into a real band with live shows.
Sounds pretty cool, right? Unfortunately, like many things, the concept was much better than its manifestation.
This fantasy-turned-reality band sounds like a poor-quality Evanescence/Opeth knock-off, with a badly feminized Geddy Lee on vocals. There are even parts where I thought it could sound like a gothic version of Amy Grant. Ick.
In the style of typical proggy albums, “Tit” is way too long at well over one hour of fairly uninteresting music. The thoughts are original and creative, but executed in a very tacky and mediocre manner.
Prog metal is like a fantasy dragon t-shirt. It’s really hard for it to be cool. It happens, but rarely. And certainly not in this case.
2.5/10: I hope the novel is better than its soundtrack.
After going thru that crap, you most likely wanna read something way more interesting. You do, admit it.
